midshift boob tube moments
being on the midshift allows me to watch shows that i would usually miss. and being awake at 3am watching spongebob is something else! i mean, imagine it being so silent, and suddenly you hear spongebob's laugh!
last night while trying to sleep, i was able to watch pipol (of course hosted by my katukayo ces drilon). the episode was about the pipol of 2005. they featured nene from big brother (like i really care about her!), this other dude whose segment i wasn't able to watch (like i really care about him!), and dylan wilk, one of the organizers of gawad kalinga.
dylan wilk is a brit who came to the philippines and decided that he wanted to help out the poor. so he sold his property in the UK, came to philippines, married a filipina and gave his money to gawad kalingan. he said that when he came over to the phil, he found his purpose in life. to help those less fortunate and to help our beautiful country rise.
i couldn't help but be in awe of this white man's dedication to help a country that owed him nothing. and i couldn't help but wonder how this one man could give so much of himself, when the people that should be helping our poor are the ones who are making them poorer. dylan wilk also said something that struck a cord in my heart "the philippines is a beautiful country. and i don't know why most people can't see that" now that made me guilty. everyone seems to be wanting to get out of the country, go to white man's land where they'll be considered as second, even third!, class citizens. eat potatoes and burgers, milkshakes and blueberries. wear gap, old navy knowing that they were made here. i won't be a hypocrit and say that i don't think about moving there, i do. but now i'm reconsidering. the philippines IS a beautiful country! if people could only work together, and work for the better of everyone and not be selfish (read:corrupt), then we can surpass all our asian neighbors. we need to believe in what our country can be. we need to see the potential of everyone. we.need.to.have.hope.
on the same show, they showed a quick segment on those prominent people who passed away last year. they showed reynaldo punongbayan (phivocs director), reynaldo wycoco (nbi director), robert barbers (senator), cardinal sin (archbishop of manila), and a couple of more famous people. and i swear, after the 3 minute picture flashes, a tear rolled down my cheek. i'm crying for people i don't know, nor cared for.
maybe it was just pms kicking in.
from house (the show on axn):
you're right, i'm not over you. you were the one. you'll always be the one. i just can't be with you...
